For the most flexible program - from the period of study to the absolute customization of the curriculum, the CALL Seminar Program (Computer Aided Language Learning) is the most advanced of its kind available from an accredited institution in Japan.

For busy professionals, this program may be the ideal way to improve your Japanese - a weekend study program, tailored to your needs, and with high quality accommodation provided - or perhaps a week during your summer or winter holidays - this is the most flexible language program you will find anywhere.

  • With CALL you can customize your studies right down to the content of each lesson.
  • Maximum of 4 students per faculty member in the CALL Seminar Center at any time.
  • Each workstation in the CALL Language lab is private and enclosed.
  • Even if you are a beginner, you can start on any day of the year except a public holiday.

    Period of study:

If you require accommodation, you can study from as short as 2 days, to as long as 50 days on campus, with easy transfers to other Extension programs. Study for 2 to 6 hours per day. Minimum enrolment per day is 2 lessons/day, minimum duration of study 2 days. Minimum enrollment is 6 lessons.
For local residents, ACJS students or visitors who do not require Yamasa accommodation may study part-time provided the minimum rate of study is only 1 lesson per week.

    Structure and Levels:

Fifty-minute lessons can be started at any ten minute interval throughout the day. During the space of a fifty minute lesson, you spend ten minutes consulting or practising directly with your advisor - reviewing, questioning and preparing your next tasks - and 40 minutes working on exercises. In consultation with your teacher, you can choose the areas of language on which you want to concentrate.

    Resources and facilities:

You will have full access to the facilities and staff of the Online Center for Japanese Studies. The Institute's CALL Seminar Center is equipped with the latest learning aids (both digital and in print form) for most major languages (ie dictionaries, grammar references, etc.) A lab consists of large individual workstations (maximum of 4 students per faculty member), each of which is linked by a 100Mbit internal network to the video servers and databases. This enables you to watch streaming video or audio on demand without buffering and high sound and picture quality - all customizable.

    Teaching staff:

Each class will have a maximum of five students per teacher. OCJS faculty are all experienced in teaching not just with the OCJS online methodologies but also in modern private and group language teaching methods. Before joining the OCJS team, all faculty members are required to be able to speak at least 2 languages, have a Masters or higher degree, and have experience of studying a language abroad. All faculty also have extensive experience in teaching Japanese as a foreign language, and a minimum of two years teaching experience before joining the OCJS.

Please note that a mixed purchase of private and CALL seminar lessons is also possible.

If you need accommodation from Yamasa's Housing office then you need to study at least 10 lessons (Private/Semi-private/CALL in any combination) per week during off-seasons (February to May, and September to November), and at least 15 lessons (Private/Semi-private/CALL in any combination) per week during peak-seasons (June to August, December and January).
