The Japanese Language & Culture Summer Program is a 3 week experiential program enabling you to experience traditional
and modern Japanese culture in a very hands on way. The program is multifaceted and includes:
Language learning in small groups (maximum class size is 6) with highly qualified faculty. This
also includes an individualized one-to-one component delivered in small group and CALL seminars (see outline)
to help you learn what you need. You also have the opportunity to enjoy catered lunches with your teachers each
day providing extra practise.
Practical culture seminars The opportunity to learn Kabuki dance, Tea Ceremony, Kitsuke, Japanese Cooking,
Origami, Ikebana (Ohana) and Shoudo (calligraphy) as well as observing arrow making, stonework and the chance to participate
in a sake tasting seminar with Japanese sake brewers, sommeliers, and sake fans.
Field trips visiting fascinating but initially difficult to understand Japanese cultural icons such as Sumo and
Cormorant fishing, plus some difficult to get to places, including Ayu
fishing (by hand), Takisanji & Tenonji, a sake brewer and a tofu maker in an
isolated mountain village.
Festivals Matsuri are an important part of Japanese culture, and the program visits the Gion festival in Kyoto. You
will stay in a traditional ryokan in the heart of the Gion district, wear yukata (learned during the Kitsuke
seminar earlier in the course), and be able to take in the dances and music, as well as the grand parade on the 17th. We will also
visit world heritage listed sites in Kyoto including Ryoanji and Nijo Castle.
For more information about the above, please read the outline.
Accommodation is in homestays, however if hotel accommodation is preferred this is available in twin share.
For a small surcharge, single rooms can also be provided.
Please note that this is not an intensive language learning program. For additional language acquisition the program can be
combined with
Acceleration,
SILAC or
Refresher, or the programs in Sapporo.
