Hane has several unique features differentiating these apartments from the other studios in Yamasa's student housing portfolio. In this file we are referring to the 4 studio apartments designated "Type B". The term "Type B" refers to the interior design and layout. The four Type B apartments in Residence Hane are slightly larger than each of the 16 Type A apartments Key Features: Type B apartments have extensive cooking areas, high ceilings and interior door clearances, improved energy efficiency, and better privacy & security. The rooms are deliberately designed to make living in Japan more comfortable for students taller than 175cm (5 feet 7 inches) - the height of the desk, sink, food preparation areas, shower head etc have all been raised to prevent back pain and discomfort. 2 of the 4 Type B apartments (and 10 of the 16 Type A have large covered balconies (Room 112 also has a side garden), both are large enough to sit confortably outside with enough space for up to 4 people to enjoy outdoor dining. All are fully furnished and well lit, they are designed for comfortable single occupancy, with the double glazing and extensive sound insulation to reduce disruptions to your living and study environment from any external noise. Location: Hane is located next to the Student Village, about 12 minutes walk, (by bicycle only about 6 minutes) from the campus. They are also close to shops, restaurants, supermarkets and bus-stops. A 24 hour convenience store and late night coin laundry are 1 minute away. Click here for location map (opens new window). Click the black arrows on the left of the map for route to Yamasa's campus or to navigate around the local area. Click on shops, and other features on the map for more detail. Interior Design: The apartments are western style with floors of polished wood. There are 2 different internal designs "Type B" (4 rooms) and "Type A" (16 rooms). Type B is the larger. The other diffences being the balcony size & type (see the Balconies/External Features section below) The internal space of Type B (floorplan: PDF | GIF) is 25.20 square meters (approx. 266 square feet).
Shower/Bathroom: The height of the showerhead can be adjusted. There is small window for better airing but it's
installed at great height and poses no threat to your privacy. At the door of the shower cabin, there is a lip installed
to prevent water from flowing out - guaranteeing a dry floor outside the bath/shower. Yamasa provides a refrigerator and an electric rice cooker. There are two gas gas jets for cooking. Please note that utensils are not provided, but can be purchased cheaply at a nearby store.
Balconies/External Features: The two apartments with balconies come with two chairs and a table with enough space to enjoy an outside meal with friends. Each apartment is provided with either a clothes line or pole. Internet Facilities: Any student living in Residence Hane has internet access (via a fast fiber-optic LAN). The cost of the connection is included in the rent and does not need to be applied for. The connection is active from the minute you move in. The desk is located next to the board containing 4 power sockets, tv antenna plug, telephone jack and ethernet jack. You would need a short length of Ethernet (CAT 5) cable to connect. If required, a cable can be purchased in local electronics shops or from Yamasa if necessary. Energy efficiency: These apartments come with shaded front doors, double glazing and better insulation than all other Yamasa accomodations. Together with the inside door between the kitchen area and the main room, you can lower the costs for heating or cooling to a minimum, saving not only your budget but also preserving the environment. Telephone and Internet: Any student living in Residence Hane has internet access (via a fast fiber-optic LAN). The cost of the connection is included in the rent and does not need to be applied for. The connection is active from the minute you move in. The desk is located next to the board containing 4 power sockets, tv antenna plug, telephone jack and ethernet jack. You would need a short length of cable to connect. If required, cable can be purchased in local electronics shops or from Yamasa. There is a telephone jack, but no telephone provided inside the apartment. If you wish to install a telephone/fax etc then you would need to obtain a lease or rent a line. Most students are using computer-to-phone software like Skype utilizing the internet connection. Yamasa will assist you if you need a telephone installed in your apartment. Most students prefer to use the cheaper option of handheld cellular phones (mobiles/cellphones). Cellphones can be obtained either from the Student Services Office ("gakuseika") in the Yamasa II Building or from local shops. For making telephone calls overseas, the Yamasa II building, Yamasa Villa, or internet phones are the best local options. Bedding, Futons & Comfort: The 4 apartments with the "Type B" interior design have the luxury of semi-double beds. These beds are 200cm X 160cm and include a spring mattress. These 4 apartments are the only apartments at Yamasa with mattresses provided. Students staying in these 4 apartments have the option of bringing/buying their own sheets & blankets or placing a futon on top of the mattress for further comfort. The other 16 apartments ("Type A" interior design) have pipe frame single beds, identical to those at the Yamasa Villa and other residences. A foam mattress (6cm thickness) is provided, but students will need to either rent or buy futons. For more information about futons please browse through the futons file. Laundry facilities: There is a coin laundry next door to the Residence, directly between the apartments and the 24 hour convenience store. The laundry has excellent dryers. If your apartment comes with a balcony, you can also dry using the provided wash line. Bicycles and parking: Bicycles are usually parked between Residence Hane and the Student Village.
This area is well lit and safe. Nonetheless, we recommend you buy a lock for your bicycle. Advantages reported by students: Close to route 248. More independence and privacy - your own bathroom. Convenient to have own kitchen and no need to wait. Quiet at night. Good study environment. Fast internet access (fiber-optic LAN). There is a door between the kitchen and the main room - this makes it easier to keep the main room warn during the winter. Insulation is better than Yamasa Villa. Microwave oven on site. Gas cooking. There is a large amount of personal space per student. Disadvantages reported by students: No wheelchair access. Student Interviews - Residence Hane Residents:
