Location: The apartments are located near Minami Koen ("South Park" - KEY / Tiziana) in the southern part of the city. They are about the same distance to the campus as Residence K. The closest Yamasa Accommodation is Residence U. On foot it is about 25 minutes, by bicycle about 10 minutes. Bicycles are usually parked in front of the apartment entrance or in the courtyard. Both areas are very secure. Free car parking is available. The apartments are usually allocated to students studying at Yamasa long term. They are located in a very quiet residential area. As well as being close to the campus, the apartments are also close to shops (the large DOMY Shopping Center includes large supermarkets, discount shops, bookstore etc) and bus-stops. There is a 24-hour convenience store (Circle K), Minami Park with swimming pool/tennis courts etc, karaoke parlor (Shidax), and restaurants and bars within 5 minutes walk. If you are looking for convenience for getting out of town to see the sights of central Japan, these apartments are a short bicycle ride from JR Okazaki Railway Station which is on the JR Tokaido Line (the main trunk route linking Osaka - Kyoto - Nagoya - Shizuoka - Tokyo) and gives you excellent access to Nagoya, Kanayama, Mikawa-Anjo, the marina/onsen resort of Gamagori on Mikawa Bay and Toyohashi. Clickable Location Map: Click here for location map (11024 bytes). Click the black arrows on the north of the map for route to Yamasa's campus or to navigate around the local area. Click on shops, and other features on the map for more detail. Description: The apartments are western style with no tatami matting. The floors are of polished wood. The space of each is 19.92 square meters (approximately 224 square feet) with a balcony of 3.24 square meters (approximately 35 square feet). Each has its own bathroom with unit shower/bath. There is a western style toilet. The apartments have air-conditioning/heating, and a small kitchen with electric hotplate and small refrigerator. Yamasa also provides an electric rice cooker. There is no gas cooking. If requested, Yamasa can provide a larger refrigerator for those who prefer to cook a lot of their own food (no charge). In the main room Yamasa provides a desk, chair & study lamp along with a bookshelf. There is a screened area for hanging clothing, however it is fairly small. If requested, Yamasa can provide a foldable closet (movable) to provide additional space for hanging clothing (no charge). The apartments also have a deceptively large amount of storage space for storing suitcases, trunks and so on. Yamasa provides a TV, and the apartment also has a few hundred radio/music channels with speakers installed.
Laundry facilities: There is a shared coin laundry on the ground floor. The laundry includes 2 washine machines (400 yen) and a dryer. Security: The Wakamatsu area is considered a very safe one. For additional security the door to the building is protected using a PIN so that only residents can enter the lobby & elevator. The code number will be supplied with your key. Each apartment has good quality locks and a chain. Telephone and Internet: Each apartment usually has a telephone jack, but there is no telephone provided inside the apartment. Students who want a telephone/internet access will need to obtain a lease or rent a line to get connected - naturally Yamasa will assist you with translation/interpreting if you need a telephone line installed in your apartment. The nearest public telephone is at the convenience store (3 minutes walk). This telephone is for domestic calls only and doesn't have datajacks. Most students prefer to use the cheaper option of handheld cellular phones (no problem to receive international calls), which can be rented from Yamasa or locally. For internet access, purchasing or renting a PHS card for a wireless connection is usually the cheapest option. For making calls overseas, the Yamasa II building (photo), international telephone cards, or internet telephony are the best local options. Futons: The apartment includes a bed, but does not include a mattress. As with the other accommodations, students purchase or rent futons. For more information please browse through the futons file. Advantages reported by students: Close to DOMY Shopping center and Minami park. More independence and privacy. Convenient to have own kitchen and no need to wait. Quiet at night. Good study environment. There is a large amount of personal space per student. Disadvantages reported by students: Lack of telephone inside room is a problem for short term students as renting cellular phones is relatively expensive compared to the telephone access in the student village. No access to internet via Yamasa's LAN. PHS card access is reasonably fast but not as quick as LAN and much more expensive. Plus you need to pay for an account, whereas the LAN access at the student village and on campus is free. No wheelchair access. No microwave oven on site. No Gas cooking. |
