Saturday August 19th - Nagoya City and Harbor

We spend a day looking at the parts of the city most students don't have the opportunity to see. Some of the sites for the day include...

-Shiratori-garden: one of the biggest Japanese gardens in central Japan.
-Nagoya City harbor cruise: Enjoy the city views from the cruise.
-Port of Nagoya public aquarium.

Sunday, August 20 - Otogawa Yana

-Ayu - Catch fish with your hands.
-Toga shrine - At the top of Mt. Hongusan - a glimpse of the "lost Japan".

Monday August 21 - Iseshima, Osatsu

A two day trip into the spiritual heart of Japan...

-Lunch at the famous "Meoto-iwa" shrine at the "Wedded Rocks".
-Drive along the Pearl Road, center of Japan's renowned pearling industry.
-The famous green water of Matoya bay and Osatsu. There is beach directly in front of our hotel - swimming, sunbathing, and a delicious banquet of fresh seafood!

Tuesday August 22 - Mt. Asakuma, Okage Yokocho, Grand Shrines of Ise

In the morning, a traditional breakfast, then via the Ise-shima Skyline to the top of Mt. Asakuma to look out over the town and the bays.

-Stroll around Ise, eat lunch in Okage Yokocho, a small town with sake brewery houses, inns, tea shops clustering together in the vicinity of the Naiku Shrine of Ise-Jingu Grand Shrine, the most venerated Shinto shrine in Japan.

Wednesday August 23 - Handa, Tokoname

A day looking at some of the traditional crafts of Japan.

-Arimatsu Shibori Museum - textiles and the different kinds of traditional dyeing techniques.
-Ceramics - 'Cera Mall' for every kind of ceramic product from small coffee cups to monuments.
-Kunizakari Brewery Museum - Learn about making rice wine and taste some of the local sake.
-Shiho Ningyo Museum - Japanese traditional doll museum.

Thursday August 24 - Kyoto

The large sprawling city of Kyoto - the home of Japan's imperial family from 794 to 1868. To help gain a feel for the city and its history, we visit three locations representing different periods in the city's long history.

-Heian-Jingu shrine - designed to replicate the Imperial Palace of the Heian era (794-1185).
-Kiyomizu-dera Temple - One of the most famous landmarks of the city.
-Nijo Castle - Ieyasu (the first Tokugawa shogun) built this castle to demonstrate his power and prestige.

Friday August 25 - Okutono, Asuke

-Okutonojinya - a 1300-year-old village for green tea in a traditional tea room.
-Sansyu Asuke Yashiki - traditional village.
-Obara Paper Art Museum - practice your Japanese learning to make paper and a hand fan of Washi (traditional Japanese paper).
