Introduction:

The Yamasa Institute is seeking an experienced professional to join the Japanese language faculty in a senior management role. The Director will be responsible for:

  • Supervising academic curriculum development
  • Providing a key advisory role in the management and policy formulation of both the ACJS and OCJS,
  • Conducting all internal teacher training and career development for Japanese language instructors in both centers.

    The position will be advertized until a suitable candidate is found.

    Computer Skills:

    The Director will have a full time technical support team, excellent equipment and a high degree of autonomy. You do not need to have extensive computer experience - but you will be able to receive expert training if you do need to feel comfortable using the internet, intranets, office software and bulletin boards.

    Education Background:

    The Director should have as a minimum a Master's degree in Japanese Language Education. If your postgraduate degree was not in Japanese Language Education then you should have a PhD in Applied Linguistics. A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience is recommended including at least two years outside Japan. All teaching, training and management is to be conducted in Japanese, however it would be useful if you also have daily conversational fluency in at least one of the following foreign languages - Chinese, English, German, Korean or Spanish. The Director does not necessarily need to be a Japanese national or native speaker, however all applicants should have native speaker level fluency in the Japanese language.

    Travel:

    The Director may need to travel both inside Japan and abroad to conferences concerning the field of Japanese language education, distance learning, telematics and for liaison with strategic development partners including universities and technology firms. Such travel would usually be for 5-10 days.

    Salary and Conditions:

    Salary will be determined according to background and experience. The estimated salary range is 500,000 to 750,000 per month for the first year. Suitable accommodation can be arranged on request. There is a joining bonus of 200,000 yen. This bonus is payable after the completion of 3 months. A performance based bonus would be payable after completion of 12 months. Suitable office space will be provided and the daily schedule includes a flexitime option. In addition to paid leave, the Director may apply for up to 2 weeks of research leave.
