If you have studied Japanese at a university or college, and wish to obtain advanced standing in the programs then you can do so by applying for Transfer Credits. A maximum of 12 credit points may be transferred from other institutes/universities and for the Graduate Certificate you can use 8 of these as academic credits (for the Graduate Diploma you can use up to 12 transfer credits). This will allow you to graduate earlier than you would otherwise be able to do, or upgrade your Graduate Certificate to a Graduate Diploma.
To apply for Transfer Credit you will need to submit...
1) Original transcripts or certified copies of transcript of previous studies of Japanese.
2) A letter of recommendation from the faculty/teachers of your previous studies.
3) Completed application form and other requirements for Admission.
On arrival you will receive extensive placement testing. 6 transfer credits will be conferred if your test scores indicate previous knowledge of the content of Elementary 1 (equal to approximately 150 hours of study, JLPT Level 4, Minna no Nihongo Lesson 25). A further 6 transfer credits will be conferred if your test scores indicate previous knowledge of the content of Elementary 2 (equal to approximately 300 hours of study, JLPT Level 3, Minna no Nihongo Lesson 50). All transfer credits are allocated on the basis of 1 AIJP quarter = 6 credit points. For GPA calculation - the transfer credits will be measured at the same grade as your GPA for courses undertaken at Yamasa over the full length of your enrollment.

As the Graduate programs are academically oriented, it is a requirement that the majority of credit points be from academic programs, ie. Acceleration, AIJP, AJSP or Transfer Credits. This means that while a limited number of credits may be conferred from Extension or Online studies, students aiming for the Graduate Diploma or Graduate Certificate will need to commit to studies that include a heavy emphasis on reading, kanji skills and literacy in regards to modern Japanese texts and materials.

To complete the Graduate programs, it is a requirement that the majority of credit points be from programs taught by the Yamasa Institute (18 credits in the case of the Graduate Certificate, 24 for the Graduate Diploma).

As the Graduate programs are also designed to be flexible, it is possible to use extension program credits as part of your studies. This is to enable some members of the learning community such as professionals to use short term programs or distance learning without disadvantage. However the integrity of the program depends on graduates obtaining high proficiency in reading, kanji, and literacy skills. As the Extension program curriculum has a greater emphasis on oral communication skills, the Institute limits the number of credits from Extension programs that can be counted towards the Graduate Certificate to 6 credits and 9 for the Graduate Diploma.

In addition to coursework and examinations, students seeking a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma will be required to research a topic of interest chosen in consultation with their academic advisor, write an essay in Japanese on the topic and then give an oral presentation. Details of suitable topics are available after 6 months of studies.
