See more, learn more, do more! Study Japanese in Hokkaido this summer. If your proficiency is at beginner to intermediate level, you have the option of studying either in Okazaki (in Aichi) in Sapporo, or a combination of both. All applications can be completed online. We are also able to offer a wider range of choices, including single room accommodations, homestays, additional private lessons for customized needs, and the chance to learn Japanese while seeing more of Japan than previously possible. And all at very affordable costs.

The Sapporo component is a little less intensive and interactive than the components offered in Okazaki, with 20 classes taught per standard week, each of 45 minutes length. Classes begin each weekday morning at 9am and finish at 12.25pm with 5 minute breaks between classes. In Sapporo you have the opportunity to participate in up to 4 afternoon cultural classes. The result is a program that is much more laid back, giving you plenty of time to explore Sapporo and its environs. If you are looking to enjoy Hokkaido, learn a little bit of Japanese and only have about 4 weeks available to spend in Japan, then the Sapporo only options are very suitable. If you wish to see Sapporo and Hokkaido but also want to significantly improve your Japanese, then options including Okazaki are worth consideration. For combined campus options, the airfare and transfer between Okazaki and Sapporo is included. It is a door-to-door service.

The Sapporo Summer Festival will be held from late July with most events centered on Odori Park. There are plenty of beer gardens, live music, and other attractions to keep you busy. The Toyohira River Fireworks Festival is held at this time, and there is also the Kappa festival at Jozankei Onsen in early August. Summers in Sapporo are not as hot or humid as in Okazaki, which is one of the main reasons tourists from elsewhere in Japan flock to Hokkaido around this time.

Since you are in Hokkaido, it is worth travelling as much as possible. Jozankei Onsen and Otaru are good day trips from Sapporo. The historic treaty port of Hakodate would require at least an overnight stay as it is about 3 hours from Sapporo by train. Hokkaido also has some wonderful national parks such as Daisetsuzan and Shikotsu-Toya (complete with new volcanic craters), plus there are many other outdoor activities you can try such as rafting in Niseko etc. These can be a little expensive due to the peak season. If you need outdoor equipment (hiking boots, climbing gear etc), Shugakuso is a very good shop near Kita-12-jou (north street #12) station on the Nanboku (north south) subway line. They also have an excellent indoor climbing wall on the top floor and the management of Shugakuso also run the Patagonia outlet just down the street.

Internet access is limited on the Sapporo campus, with several internet enabled PCs available for student use, but no wireless network as yet. Internet access is limited (and in some cases unavailable) in the accommodations, so you may need to use the local internet cafes. Copying facilities are available. The tuition fees include free transfer from airport/train station and includes your text books.

Please choose a program that suits your needs and schedule - we hope you can join us and enjoy summer in Japan. If you are unsure of which program to choose, please write to Mr Declan Murphy. All of the summer programs are extremely popular - so apply early - well before the various deadlines. If you are on the JET program, please read the Study Leave for Jet Program participants file.
