Sapporo Art Park

The Sapporo Art Park is an effort to present art in a more open and accessible environment. Established in 1986, the natural and spacious setting allows both artist and the works of art to interact with both nature and the public. Visitors also has opportunities to test their own artistic talents at the park's regular workshops in crafts such as ceramics, cloisonne, and weaving, as well as glass, wood and silver crafts.

The 40 hectare park is in the southern suburbs of the city and consists of a Sculpture Garden, the Museum of Contemporary Art, various craft halls and studios, an outdoor stage, a music hall and a number of artists' cottages. The Sculpture Garden has a permanent display of over seventy pieces of art distributed openly over a 7.5 hectare outdoor setting. There is also a Hidden Garden which reportedly has a more integrated work set within it. The Museum of Contemporary Art provides regular exhibitions of works by world famous artists.

There is an entry fee for the Sculpture Garden and Museum but much of the park's woodlands, as well as the studios and other buildings, can be enjoyed for free. The entry fee for the Sculpture Garden is 600 yen for adults, 480 yen for seniors and free for children and Junior high school students. There is a separate admission fee for the Museum of Contemporary Art that varies depending on the exhibition. A combination ticket is available for the two facilities whose price depends on the current museum rate.

How to get there
From Sapporo Station:   Buses to the Art Park depart from the Sapporo Station bus terminal and take approximately 40 minutes.
Via Makomanai station:   An alternative is to take the Namboku line (Green Line) south towards Makomanai from platform 1 of the subway station, then a 12-minute bus to the Art Park. Tickets can be purchased from the machines near the entrance and prices and maps are all written in Roman letters. A transfer ticket for both subway and bus is available for ¥400 (then an extra ¥80 must be paid when you get off the bus at the Art Park).
The subway journey to the terminus at Makomanai takes about 17 minutes from Sapporo Station. Buses depart from both the right and left side of Makomanai Subway Station's exit, but the bus for the Art Park departs from No. 2 Chuo Bus stop on the left of the exit. Buses 101, 102 for Takino, Soranuma & Sunbright, depart every 15 minutes and all pass the Art Park entrance. However, buses that enter the Art Park gates and stop in front of the Art Park Centre depart on the hour and 30 minutes past the hour.
