The history sculpture. On the left is "Old Red Bricks", perhaps the most famous building in Sapporo. On the right coming out of a tunnel is a snow shinkansen ("bullet train"). There is no shinkansen connecting Hokkaido to the rest of Japan, the only rail link is the Seikan tunnel which replaced the rail/ferry services that operated between Hakodate and Aomori. The image to the right is part of an on-going political campaign by the Hokkaido government to have a (heavily subsidized) shinkansen line built between Morioka and Sapporo.
