The two big areas are Furano and Niseko, with the later enjoying a massive boom due to new investment (particularly from Australia) that has increased the number of skiers and snowboarders visiting the 3 major ski hills in Niseko, Hirafu (including Hanazono), Annapuri and Higashiyama. If you enjoy the après-ski scene as much as the snow and don't want to be too far from great nightlife, or are studying in Hokkaido, note that Sapporo City has good skiing conditions close to hand, especially at Sapporo Kokusai and the interesting Sapporo Teine ski field.
