Nagashima Spaland, Mie Prefecture

The Steel Dragon
The Steel Dragon

Nagashima Spaland is the place to be for updated old-style amusement park thrills. The park, called one of the best in Japan by Mainichi newspaper, features the Steel Dragon, a world record holding roller coaster for height (for an out-and-back coaster), at 97 meters, and length, at nearly 2.5 kilometers. This roller coaster can achieve a speed of 153 kilometers an hour during its initial dive from its 97 meter peak.

Another impressive roller coaster, though more for its construction and appearance, is the massive White Cyclone. At 37 meters high and 1.7 kilometers long, it isn't as intimidating as the Steel Dragon but this wooden roller coaster is amazing to look at, especially from above aboard the 91 meter high ferris wheel. Unlike many other wooden roller coasters, the White Cyclone is also well maintained. Even if you do not ride it, it is still a marvel just to look at.

These are just two of nine roller coasters featured at Nagashima Spaland which include a Corkscrew, Double Wild Mouse, and Looping coaster rides. The facility also has many other well-known rides such as the aforementioned Ferris wheel, a free-fall ride, speed elevator, swinging pirate ship and a log ride.

During the summer, Nagashima Spaland also has 10 huge swimming pools complete with 18 kinds of water slides offer enthusiasts an alternative to both thrill and cool down in the heat.

A one-day pass costs 4,100 yen for adults and 3,100 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

How to get there:

By car from Nagoya, take the "Tomeihan Expressway", also known as the Wan Gan expressway, through the Port of Nagoya and get off at the Nagashima or Suzuka interchange.
