Iga Ueno Danjiri Museum

One of Ueno city's big annual events is the 400 year-old Ueno Tenjin festival held between October 23rd to 25th. Originally a sacred agricultural ritual, the festival has elaborate portable shrines and demon-costumed revellers parading in the streets, but a main feature is the nine danjiri carted through the city. The danjiri is a type of dashi, a traditional Japanese festival float on wheels. When not being used in the festival, the Iga Ueno Danjiri Museum houses three of these floats for public viewing.

Showcase in Danjiri Museum
The external appearance of the museum building is designed in the image of the traditional white wall danjiri shed. Inside, it exibits the three danjiri and a reproduction of the Oni-gyoretsu (the Demon Procession), another featured attraction of the Tenjin Festival.

The three danjiri floats are encased in a large round glass-walled exhibition room, set about with life-sized models reenacting a festival scene. The floats are mounted on a turntable to make it possible to see them from every angle. As it is, visitors are able to walk and see completely around the showcase from the first floor, as well as partway from above the second.

Along the walls of the first floor are other display cases, one recreating the Oni-gyoretsu in a historic street scene setting. Oni masks used in the festival and other types collected from the area, including Noh, are also displayed.

The second floor provides an overhead view of the danjiri showcase room but also features audio-visual presentations about the life, history, products and people of Ueno. One such regular multi-media show is projected onto three 300-inch screens above the danjiri room.

There are some fun activities to participate in while touring the museum. Several different stamp pads are located throughout the museum. When entering the museum, be sure to take a stamp sheet with you. If you collect all the stamps in the museum on the sheet, a prize will be given to you. There are also a couple of locations in the museum where you can try on festival or ninja clothing on to have your picture taken in.

A fairly large souvenir shop is located at the exit of the museum showcasing goods and information of the Iga-Ueno region. The selection here is more informative than what can be found in Ueno Castle and Ninja Yashiki Museum. Standard souvenir fare is available, including gift sets of local foods, but there are also books and interactive displays.

How to get to the Danjiri Museum

Ueno City is about 95 kilometers west of Nagoya and eighty kilometres east of Osaka. From the JR Nagoya or Osaka Station, take the JR Kansai Main Line to Iga Ueno Station and transfer to Kintetsu Iga Line to Uenoichi Station. It takes 1 hour and 40 minutes or 2 hours depending on timing and route. The museum itself is a three minute walk away, just outside of Ueno Park where Ueno Castle and the Ninja Yashiki Museum are located.

Admission fee into the museum is 500 yen for adults. A combined admission ticket is available for Ueno Castle, Ninja Yashiki Museum and the Danjiri Museum, all within walking distance.

Opening hours for the Danjiri Museum are between 09:00 and 17:00 daily. The museum is also closed for a few days around New Year's, the second or third Saturday and Sunday in April, and between October 23 and 25 for the Ueno Tenjin Festival. It will be worth phoning the museum at 0595-24-4400 (in Japanese) to confirm the opening hours.
