Lotus plants in the Shinobazu-no-ike provide a sanctuary for bird life, and a blaze of color when the flowers bloom during August/September. The stone lanterns are all that remain of the earlier temple - the destruction here during WWII was caused by incendiaries dropped from the B29's, not from high explosive.
